Using Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS (Dapper), the following workaround seems to work ( from http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/341#comment_5 ): nano /usr/share/ipmitool/ipmi.init.basic The top section looks like this: # load the ipmi modules modprobe ipmi_msghandler modprobe ipmi_devintf module loaded. /dev/ipmi0 does not exist. *Modules are loaded : * Module Size Used by ipmi_devintf 7983 0 ipmi_si 42399 0 ipmi_msghandler 35958 2 ipmi_devintf,ipmi_si *dmidecode :* System Information Manufacturer: Briefly describe the problem (required): Upload screenshot of ad (required): Select a file, or drag & drop file here. ✔ ✘ Please provide the ad click URL, if possible: Home Browse You must start 'ipmi' service, which loads the drivers. http://serverfault.com/questions/480371/ipmitool-cant-find-dev-ipmi0-or-dev-ipmidev-0

I've installed CentOS 6.3 and most of the OpenIPMI, FreeIPMI and lmsensors packages to no avail. Or have I missed something more elemental in installing ipmitool? If you'd like to contribute content, let us know. weblink Also note that installing ipmitool does not install any other packages at all.
